Two hours learning how horses think, feel, and communicate. A day at Thomas School camp gives your child a genuine, immersive equestrian experience. Campers ride daily while spending dedicated time in hands-on horsemanship and horse science on our 49-acre Jericho campus—the kind of hour-by-hour depth that’s rare for a summer camp. At one of Long Island’s longest-running horse camps, riders are grouped by riding level so every camper is working at the right pace. Camp participants are grouped by riding level rather than age or cabin assignment. That means a beginner isn’t stuck keeping pace with kids who’ve ridden for years, and a strong young rider isn’t held back by their age group either—everyone is grouped with campers who are working on the same skills they are. Every camper spends their week focused on the exact skills they’re ready to master. ###### What a Day at Camp Looks Like ## Riding is one part of the day. Horsemanship is the rest of it. Camp runs as a day program, 10am to 3pm—no overnight stays, and all horses are provided, so campers don’t need to own or bring one. Roughly an hour goes to riding instruction, and at least two more hours are dedicated to horsemanship and horse science—the hands-on side of caring for a horse, not just riding one. It’s the same depth campers get in the saddle, just applied to everything around the horse, too. ![Horse campers don't need a horse of their own participate](https://www.thomasschoolofhorsemanship.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Assets/Images/Camp%20Photos/imgi_3_gallery6.png?width=700&height=802&name=imgi_3_gallery6.png) ###### Growing Into a Counselor-in-Training Role ## Starting at 14, more experienced riders can take the next step. Camp isn’t just for the youngest riders. For those who keep coming back, there’s a next step: they can move into the Counselor-in-Training (CIT) program, taking on more responsibility around the barn and with younger campers.
