Lessons for Established Riders
English riding lessons for experienced riders on Long Island.
Refine your equitation, master show jumping, and step onto the competition circuit—all supported by experienced instructors and exceptional lesson horses, without the burden of private horse ownership.
From private lessons to Pony Club, the IEA team, and schooling shows, this is where riders who already know the basics hone their horsemanship.
Getting Started at the Thomas School
What to expect before your lesson.
Plan to arrive about 15 minutes early to fill out paperwork and get settled into your new horseback riding community.
You’ll meet your instructor and horse before you ride. From there, you’ll continue to grow both as a rider and a person, because horsemanship is also about further developing the character and confidence that will carry you throughout your life.
Private
The most individual attention available.
Every minute is built around your pace and what you’re working on that week. Private lessons are best if you want focused, uninterrupted instruction.
Group
You’ll grow alongside a small group of riders at a similar stage, learning together under one instructor.
Excellent for building ring navigation, pacing around other horses, and enjoying equestrian community.
The best schools don’t just teach riding, they build people.
How You’re Placed at TSH
Our instructors have a solid track record for matching riders to the right group and horse.
Your instructor uses your first lesson or two to evaluate your position, balance, and goals in real time, placing you in the exact group and horse pairing that supports your growth—with full flexibility to adjust as you progress.
The Many Paths Available to YoU
There’s no pressure to compete, and no ceiling if you want to.
Your riding journey is yours to define. Some students prefer weekly recreational lessons for years, refining their horsemanship purely for the love of horses and sport. Others work their way up through local shows, recognized competition, the show team, or IEA. Or they skip the scoreboard entirely and go the Pony Club route instead.
Wherever you want to go, it starts here, with considerate and qualified instructors who have developed a lifelong love of horses.
