FAQs

Do I need to own a horse?
You don’t have to own a horse to experience horsemanship on Long Island. Every rider is matched with one of our school horses, lesson after lesson. While riders may switch between horses—which is intended to enhance your child’s skills as a rider—they will likely develop a strong bond with one horse in particular.
What ages can take lessons?
We welcome riders ages 6 through adult. You don’t age out of learning here.
Do you provide horses?
Yes, we keep around 30 school horses on site, matched to each rider’s skill, size, and experience. You’re never on your own to find one. You’re also welcome to board your horse with us.
What should riders wear?
For safety and comfort, all riders must follow these attire requirements:
  • Helmets: ASTM-approved equestrian helmets are mandatory for all riders.

  • Footwear: Boots with a smooth, thin sole and a definite heel are required. Please note that work boots and sneakers are not acceptable.

  • Legwear: Riding pants or fitted leggings/jeans are required.
Where is the Thomas School located?
Thomas School of Horsemanship is located at 62 Route 106 in Jericho, New York.
Do you offer year-round programs?
Yes, lessons run year-round alongside our summer camp program, so riders don’t have to pause their progress once summer ends.
How do I know which program is right for my child?
Every rider starts with a first lesson. From there, your instructor gets a feel for their skill and goals and helps guide you toward the right next step—more lessons, camp, Pony Club, or one of our competitive programs.
Is horseback riding safe for beginners?
Every rider is paired with a qualified instructor and a school horse matched to their skill and experience, so no one’s put on a horse that’s more than they can handle.
Do I need to sign a waiver before my lesson?
Yes, waivers are handled digitally through our booking system when you complete enrollment, so there’s nothing separate to print or bring with you.
Can I choose between private and group lessons?
Yes, families can choose whichever format fits their rider’s comfort level, schedule, and goals—and can switch between formats over time.
Can I bring my dog on the property?
No, out of concern for the safety of others (especially our horses), we do not permit riders or visitors to bring their dogs to Thomas School.
